Leadership East Tennessee Executive Director Job Description
Position Summary
The Executive Director is responsible for setting the strategic vision and making key business decisions to drive excellence and growth in Leadership East Tennessee’s programs. This role oversees Leadership East Tennessee and the relationships with our 16 local counties.
The Executive Director collaborates with the Leadership East Tennessee Board of Directors to implement the strategic plan, maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders, and advance leadership development across the region.
Key Responsibilities of the Position
Board Governance & Financial Oversight
- Serve as the primary liaison to the Leadership East Tennessee Board of Directors, and reports to the board chair.
- Facilitate overall program including Graduation, Reunion and other key events
- Prepare monthly Board meeting agendas.
- Coordinates with the Finance Committee and Qualified Staff to oversee annual budget, participating in the annual budget development process alongside the budget committee.
- Lead and support fundraising initiatives, cultivating relationships with sponsors, donors, and alumni.
- Represent Leadership East Tennessee as the official spokesperson, making public appearances and securing speaking engagements.
- Manage publicity efforts, coordinating promotional materials and media outreach with the support of the Leadership East Tennessee Board.
- Serve as the media liaison, ensuring consistent branding and communication with Alumni.
- Maintain and Strengthen relationships and communications with Leadership East Tennessee Alumni.
- Oversee the membership website and social media platforms in collaboration with the Membership/Communications/Marketing Committee.
- Supervise and evaluate staff and volunteers.
- Execute other responsibilities as assigned by the Board.
Program Leadership & Administration
- Work with local teams to guide them through developing and implementing engaging program days for Leadership East Tennessee.
- Facilitate selection process for class participants across all counties by working with Board Members and Local Leadership Directors.
- Organize and facilitate annual class retreat, fostering interaction between Leadership Class Participants, Alumni, and Board Members.
- Plan and execute events to strengthen engagement and networking opportunities.
- Collaborate with Local County Leadership programs.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive organizational and member information.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent leadership experience preferred
- Leadership Background: Graduate of Leadership East Tennessee preferred
- Personal Traits: Passion for service, lifelong learner, and strong commitment to social responsibility.
- Strategic Leadership: Self-motivated, goal-driven, and results-focused with a teamwork-oriented leadership style.
- Problem-Solving: Strong skills in negotiation, decision-making, and delegation.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Ability to build and maintain relationships with the board and local community organizations.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication.
- Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with Microsoft Office, website management, and social media platforms preferred.
- Flexibility: Adaptability to changing priorities and ability to work flexible hours.
- Reliability: Ability to support monthly program days along with maintain Alumni database.
- Certifications: Personality assessment certifications a plus.
- Programs: Needs to have a working knowledge of CRM, fundraising software and QuickBooks
- Legal Requirements: Valid Driver’s license and required auto insurance. Must pass a background and credit check.
Physical & Work Environment
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain professional presence.
- Requires extended periods of walking, standing, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, and occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs).
- Ability to support program days lasting up to 12 hours throughout the region.
- May involve exposure to outdoor elements during program days.
- Must be capable of event setup and cleanup.
Work Schedule, Compensation, and Terms of Employment
- Sub-Contracted Position
- Part-time status (20 hours/week average)
- Merit increase opportunities

- Annual contract renewal process
- Salary to be determined based on experience

DISCOVER and promote the available resources that are actively working to improve the region.
CREATE a network of concerned leaders through which information can be effectively channeled to and utilized by the existing leadership programs and the increasing number of leadership graduates in the East Tennessee area.
DEVELOP recommendations for constructive actions in resolving needs.
